Ever since the overturning of Roe v Wade, the abortion industry has pivoted to mail-order abortion pills as the main abortion method and also their main source of income.
According to a LifeNews.com article, access to mifepristone is the likely reason abortion estimates for 2025 show 1.1 million abortions were performed last year. That number represents a 1.6 percent increase over 2024.
The LifeNews article, which cites an estimate by the Society of Family Planning, a pro-abortion nonprofit, said that abortion data is consistent with figures from a pro-life organization, Guttmacher Institute.
Dr. Randall K. O'Bannon, director of education and research at National Right to Life, told American Family News he questions the accuracy of the estimated number of abortions.
“They're not doing this by the number of chemical abortions that actually take place,” he advised. “They're doing this by the number of abortion pills that are sold.”
Using the sale of mifepristone, he argued, is not the same as a woman who decides to take the two-step abortion pill to end the life of her unborn child.
The abortion pill is really two pills. The first pill that is more recognized is mifepristone, which blocks progesterone and separates the fetus from the lining of the uterus. The second pill, misoprostol, mimics early labor to expel the fetus.
Even if a woman is assured by an abortion clinic that mifepristone is safe, which is a standard lie in the industry, many women might do their own online research. If so they learn the pills that are compared to taking Tylenol have serious side effects and complications from mifepristone and misoprostol.
O'Bannon said one way to help the pro-life cause is to urge lawmakers to support the APPLE Act. That model legislation, drafted by NRTL, holds the abortion pill manufacturers and prescribers legally accountable for complications caused by the abortion pill.
