Dr. Christiana Francis, who leads the American Association of Pro Life OBGYNs, told the “Washington Watch” program one in nine women, on average, have complications from taking mifepristone.
"These dangers are not hypothetical,” she cautioned. “They're complications that doctors like myself are seeing on a regular basis in our emergency rooms, seeing women come in with heavy bleeding, infection, and many other kinds (of complications)."
The abortion pill is really two steps. The first medication, mifepristone, kills the fetus by blocking the hormone progesterone. That forces the fetus to detach itself from the lining of the uterus. The second medication, misoprostol, creates pregnancy-like contractions that force the uterus to expel the fetus, much like a miscarriage.
On its own website, Planned Parenthood advises women about the “large blood clots” or “clumps of tissue” that are expelled after taking the second pill.
Not only is the abortion pill not safe for the unborn child, who is killed in the process, Dr. Francis warned it’s not safe for the mother.
“These continued claims that it is safe, safer than over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, are not only misleading for women, they're dangerous,” the OBGYN warned.
Despite mimicking a miscarriage, calling the abortion pill “safer than Tylenol” is a common claim from the pro-abortion side. Maura Healey, the liberal Massachusetts governor, made that claim last year after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling upheld easy access to the drug.
No matter a person’s stance on abortion, Dr. Francis said, everyone should care about women and their safety.
"The bottom line," the doctor concludes, "is the FDA, right now, is not doing its job when it comes to protecting women in this country."
