Following Nov. mandate, Congress urged to jump on pro-life bandwagon

Shortly after taking office in January, Donald Trump signed an executive order to end the use of taxpayer dollars to fund or promote elective abortion. Now, pro-lifers across America are calling on Congress to defund "Big Abortion."

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is the lead signatory of a March 26 letter to the members of Congress, asking them to cut funding to Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry through the process of reconciliation. "The abortion industry gets a ton of money every year, Planned Parenthood itself gets $700 million annually … and they took the lives of nearly 400,000 babies last year," notes Kelsey Pritchard with SBA Pro-Life America.

Pritchard explains that Americans, many of whom support abortion, do not want to pay for abortions. "Around 60% of Americans oppose taxpayer-funded abortions – and that includes 33% of Democrats, 41% of pro-choice voters, and 58% of Independents," she adds.

Trump's executive order, signed on January 24, 2025, revoked two of Joe Biden's executive orders and made it the policy of the United States, consistent with the Hyde Amendment, to end the forced use of federal money to fund or promote elective abortion.

Abortion, the big money-maker for PP

Over the years, people and politicians often have been reluctant to defund Planned Parenthood, arguing the organization offers services beyond abortion. Still, Pritchard says the bulk of the work at Planned Parenthood involves abortion.

"When a pregnant woman walks into a Planned Parenthood, 97% of the time she's sold an abortion and leaves without her child – rather than being helped to keep her child, to make an adoption plan. Abortion far outnumbers the number of times they help a woman with a miscarriage," she says. "We're even seeing things like their contraception services have decreased majorly in the last few years."

And while many states have taken steps to create or add restrictions on abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Pritchard says taxpayers in those states are still paying for abortion in other places.

"You can be contacting your senators, your member of Congress, to tell them that they need to defund Planned Parenthood through reconciliation and get Americans out of the business of subsidizing the number-one cause of death in our country."

More than 150 national and state pro-life leaders are joining SBA Pro-Life America in urging Congress to defund Big Abortion. After the American people delivered a mandate in November, it's a "time for change in Washington," says the letter.

Jameson Taylor, Ph.D. is with AFA Action, one of those organizations working with SBA Pro-Life America. "People disagree about abortion, but it's not fair to force taxpayers who object to abortion to pay for abortion," he tells AFN.

Taylor also counters the argument often heard from abortion advocates that Planned Parenthood offers healthcare services and not just abortion.

"There are nonprofit organizations that are doing good work in their communities that are receiving federal funding to serve low-income people," he notes. "There is no reason for Planned Parenthood to be receiving federal money because their main goal is abortion."
