In a recent MSNBC interview about “abortion rights,” Rep. Nancy Pelosi was asked by host Katy Tur how Democrats will defend abortion nationwide if President Biden is re-elected and the party controls the House and Senate.
“Very clearly we can enshrine, into the law, Roe v Wade,” Pelosi replied. “And that makes a big difference.”
After Tur pointed out that codifying it would require 60 votes in the Senate, Pelosi predicted Democrats will first vote to get rid of the filibuster if they can win 50 seats, with Vice President Kamala Harris providing a tie-breaking vote.
Emily Davis, of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, says she was surprised Pelosi would openly describe the Democrats’ plan: Get rid of the filibuster to pass a federal abortion law with no limits on weeks or trimesters.
“Everyone should hear that and be terrified at the fact that she is saying it out in the open,” Davis says.
Pelosi and the Democrats are not terrified, however, because they believe abortion is a winning issue for their side going back to the Dobbs ruling in 2022. In an NPR story last week, the liberal news service pointed out the Democrat base – especially women and young adults – says it cares about abortion more than any other topic, including the economy, inflation and illegal immigration.
Davis, however, counters that voters also support laws limiting abortion, including in the first trimester of pregnancy.
“So the fact that Pelosi is saying this means that she doesn't regard the American public's will,” Davis argues, “but rather the will of the Democratic Party and their donors like Planned Parenthood.”
