Cameron’s stance on the abortion issue is being scrutinized because the state’s pro-abortion governor, Andy Bashear, is running for re-election and aired a political ad on abortion. The ad features a young woman, who was the victim of rape and incest by her stepfather, so her tragic story is being used to bash pro-life Republicans, including Cameron (pictured below).
“Anyone who believes there should be no exceptions for rape and incest could never understand what it’s like to stand in my shoes,” the young woman, Hadley Duvall, says in the hard-hitting ad.
Duvall, who was a young teenager, miscarried the baby. Her stepfather is currently in prison.
David Walls, who leads The Family Foundation of Kentucky, says the political ad might have hit Cameron after the GOP candidate signaled he would accept exceptions for rape and incest in state law.
“I have said if the legislature were to bring me a bill with exceptions, I would sign it,” Cameron said in a statement that criticized the “false attacks” against him.
“What I will say,” Walls tells AFN, “is I do not believe there will be a desire in the pro-life-dominated General Assembly to send a bill to the governor that would legalize any additional abortions in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”
After the upcoming election, Walls adds, he predicts the legislature will continue to write and pass pro-life bills, and continue to override Gov. Bashear’s abortion-defending veto.
Regarding the Kentucky governor himself, Walls says the political ad is a reflection of him.
“It says a lot about Gov. Bashear's character, and his willingness to prey upon this tragic story,” Walls argues, “because Planned Parenthood believes it would advantage their favorite pro-abortion candidate and their billion-dollar business that profits off of killing children.”
