A “yes” vote on the Ohio ballot supports Issue 3, a measure that would amend the Ohio Constitution to put voter ID in the state document.
Red-state Ohio is one of several red-leaning states Democrats are hoping to flip on Election Day by putting a U.S. Senate seat, and the governor’s office, in their win column. Numerous polls are predicting that will happen, too.
Donald Trump won Ohio, and its 17 electoral votes, 55%-43% over Kamala Harris.
Despite that overwhelming win two years ago, GOP candidates John Husted and Vivek Ramaswamy are trailing in the polls to win a Senate seat and the governor's seat respectively.
Tom Zawistowski, president of the We the People Convention, tells American Family News he believes Issue 3 will help get Republican voters to the polls.
"Issue 3 is kind of the Ohio response to the Republicans not passing the SAVE Act,” he explains.
“It basically requires that you show proof of citizenship to register, and that you have to show a photo ID to vote,” Zawistowki further explained. “And so now you have to show ID on a mail-in ballot as well as when you show up in person."
However, voter ID is already required for voting in Ohio, including submitting an absentee ballot, but the state legislature approved the measure this summer in the House and Senate.
With razor-thin races for the U.S. Senate, and for governor on the ballot, too, Zawistowski concludes the GOP-led legislature knew what it was doing.
“I think, quite frankly, that's why the Republican legislature put it on the ballot,” he says. “They were looking at a way to bring out our voters, and I think it's working to some degree."
