Last Monday, Ramaswamy along with Republican leaders introduced the “Gas Tax Relief Plan,” which addressed the increase in prices at the gas pump. It called for 90-day suspension of Ohio’s motor fuel tax.
Ramaswamy was able to convince the Republican leadership to call a special session.
According to We the People Convention, both the House and Senate passed the measure by overwhelming margins to save the taxpayers $750 million. Ohio residents will see a reduction of 38.5 cents a gallon on gasoline and 47 cents a gallon on diesel, which will be a real boost for truckers and farmers.
Tom Zawistowski is president of the Ohio-based We the People Convention.
“This is a test of Vivek Ramaswamy’s ability to lead the Republicans in the state of Ohio. He is making really impressive promises about making Ohio great again and competing with Texas and Florida,” Zawistowski says. “None of that mattered until the vote because it was just words. It was just another politician making campaign promises.”
The action by the legislature, he says, was proof to the voters that Ramaswamy can deliver.
“I think this is going to make a huge impact on this race. Right now, there are polls saying that Acton is winning against Ramaswamy,” Zawistowski states.
Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur who founded Roivant Sciences, is running for Ohio governor against Democrat candidate Amy Acton, a former director of the state’s Department of Health.
Newsweek reports that Acton has a nine-point lead over her opponent in a Suffolk poll and a six-point lead in a Marist poll. However, a poll by Big Data Poll showed that Ramaswamy was leading by a little more than 2 percentage points.
“I don't believe that, but it is pretty clear that the race was much closer than it should be. I think that with the vote, it will bring a lot of people in a position where they're going to want to support Ramaswamy because he's credible,” Zawistowski says. “It proves that he's credible, and that's a very big deal.”
The tea party leader says it is now up to Ohio Republicans to get out and vote.
