Megan Romer, national co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), told David Remnick of “The New Yorker Radio Hour” podcast that the party's platform is to tax the heck - not the word she used - out of millionaires.
According to the Daily Mail, things didn't go so well when Remnick asked for details.
Romer: “But we do believe in taxing millionaires. Yeah, absolutely.”
Remnick: “Well, what does taxing them mean?”
Romer: “Yeah, you know, again, I don't have, like, a solid… But think —
Remnick: “But shouldn't you? I mean, if you’re the co-chair, shouldn’t you be more specific than just taxing something? What exactly do you mean?”
Romer then delivered a rambling answer about "democracy" and "looking at what we need to spend" and "what we need to pay for in the interim."
Romer appeared to dance around the socialist view that millionaires shouldn't exist at all because they are exploiting the "working class" to obtain and keep their wealth.
Romer, who grew up in a working-class family herself, is a member of the "Red Star Caucus" of the DSA. That is one of the communist groups within DSA that ended its ban on open communist members.
More street lights deter rape?
Not the Bee reports on a second eye-opening media interview in which a reporter directly confronted a DSA leader about the logic of disbanding police departments and emptying the prisons.
Frances Gill, a Los Angeles-based licensed psychiatrist, is also a national committee member of the DSA. She was asked by Conan Nolan, of NBC 4 Los Angeles, to clarify what the party's position was on “defund the police" and emptying prisons.
Gill: “What we really want to see is a horizon where folks are not reliant on armed enforcement to meet our public safety needs.”
Nolan: “Right, but it says ‘defund police’ on the website. That's your goal. And also, to get rid of prisons and jails. Correct?
Gill: “Yes.”
Nolan asked rather bluntly if his own daughter was raped, would there be any accountability for the rapist?
Gill: “Of course, absolutely.”
Nolan: “What would it be if not police, and where would he be if not a jail?”
Gill: “I guess, I really want to avoid getting kind of caught into these hypotheticals.”
It's not clear from the interview if Gill was calling Nolan's question about justice for rape victims "hypotheticals," but the DSA member went on to complain "insane" amounts of taxpayer money is being spent on police and policing. A better use of those funds to make people feel safe, she said, is better street lighting in Los Angeles.
"Everybody agrees that's a huge problem," Gill said of L.A.'s lack of street lighting.
