Republicans need to ditch the filibuster and get DHS funded

A conservative activist is calling the Republican Senate leadership to task for refusing to end the filibuster in order to resume funding the Department of Homeland Security.

Even though American service members have already given their lives in the ongoing war with Iran, Democrats continue to play politics by refusing to fund the DHS. Marketplace reports that Senate Majority Leader John Thune lambasted Senate Democrats for using the DHS shutdown as a "political pawn."

Senate Democrats are dragging their feet in passing the funding bill since January in the wake of ICE casualties Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota during January. Democrats are determined to continue voting “no” and keep the filibuster until ICE reforms are made, that agents “remove face masks, wear body cameras and obtain warrants to search homes.”

According to the Hill, Republicans argue that DHS should reopen after the Iranian strikes because of increased national security threat. However, Democrats believe that does not excuse Republicans from reevaluating their immigration enforcement tactics.

Meanwhile, there are around 100,000 employees who are not being paid during this partial government shutdown. DHS Sec.Kristi Noem and Thune said that, along with DHS furloughs and missing paychecks, airports will soon see delays and cancellations if this continues any longer.

The House advanced a GOP-backed DHS funding bill. It will be voted on today, and is excepted to pass. However, it is still up in the air if it will pass in the Senate.

"Shame on the national Democrat Party. Shame on the Democrats in the United States Senate who continue not to fund the Department of Homeland Security when we are in the middle of a very high-risk time for terrorist attacks in the United States," states Bauer.

Bauer says that Republicans need to kill the filibuster while they still have control.

"I continue to think that, sadly, the majority of Republican senators continue to think that, as soon as President Trump is gone, American politics will get back to the point where neither party does anything that violates tradition and so forth,” states Bauer.

To that, he says, they are dead wrong.

“If the Democrats get enough votes in the United States Senate, they will get rid of the filibuster. If you are an elected Republican official and you still don't understand that, you're too stupid to be involved in politics," states Bauer.
