Des Moine superintendent fiasco could doom Norris’ future aspirations

The chair of the Des Moines School Board has ended her U.S. senate campaign, citing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest of the school superintendent.

Does this mean her political ambitions are over?

"This is the kind of thing that can really stick," Iowa attorney and broadcaster Jeff Stein told AFN about Jackie Norris and her political ambitions.

Stein, Jeff (Iowa attorney, broadcaster) Stein

Jackie Norris has been on the Des Moines School Board since 2021. One of the things she pointed to for her senate campaign was having run a school district as a school board president.

"When you're saying that your main qualification is your great leadership running a school district as a school board president, and it becomes the butt of a national joke, it's really hard for you to call upon that as a great qualification," added Stein.

Norris has tried to say it was not the school board or school district's fault for the ICE arrest of Ian Andre Roberts. The school district has even filed a lawsuit against the consulting firm that did the search for Roberts and other candidates.

ICE arrested Roberts in late September, saying he's an illegal immigrant from Guyana who was found with weapons and cash upon his arrest.

Norris worked previously for Michelle Obama, but Stein said he is not sure the "political climate in Iowa" is one that would embrace that work experience.

"Both Jackie Norris and her husband, John, have tried for higher political office themselves," said Stein. "To this point, it hasn't worked out and this certainly would seem to be a disqualifier for many voters."
