In a Fox News interview, Patrick all but admitted she focused on her racing career while ignoring politics. She never took the time to study the issues, she explained, so she felt like not voting was a consequence of that decision.
“It’s not something I’m proud of, I would say, but it is true,” Patrick told Jesse Waters.
Patrick, now 42, became the only woman in history to win an IndyCar Series race. She transitioned to NASCAR stock cars, where she earned seven Top 10s before retiring in 2018.
After spending years ignoring politics and avoiding the news, Patrick told Waters she has been absorbing the news for a year now. That is why she believes Trump is the "rational, reasonable choice" in the presidential race.
"If he gets into office with all of the amazing, brilliant people that are supporting him,” Patrick predicted, “I feel like it could not only be 'make America great again' but 'make America greater than it's ever been.'"
Patrick first announced she is voting for Trump, and admitted she had never voted, at an Oct. 10 political appearance with J.D. Vance, the Republican vice president nominee.
“I just want to say I’ve never voted before, but this time around, I have to vote. It’s that important,” Patrick said at a town hall in North Carolina.
