The legislation limits people to participate and compete in sports that align with their DNA.
"Women have worked really hard to get to a scholarship level,” state Sen. Beth Mizell told the “Washington Watch” program. “And to have that taken away by someone who is biologically different, and more physically able to outrun a woman, it's not the way things should work.”
Several other states including Montana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Florida have passed similar bills into law, drawing backlash for their “anti-transgender” laws, but Mizell said there is nothing discriminatory in the Louisiana bill.
"We had such strong support,” she advised. “And I would hope the governor would look at the representatives speaking out loudly for their constituents on both sides of the legislature, and hear that loud and clear, and not veto it.”
A poll of the state's citizens found 83% support protecting women's sports, she added.
