President Donald Trump’s primetime address rightly brought the election integrity principle back to the forefront of the national conversation.
Every election season weighs the future of the nation’s policy in the balance. If citizens lose confidence in the integrity of their elections, they begin to lose confidence in their government itself. Our constitutional republic depends not only on the right to vote, but on the public’s trust that every lawful vote is counted accurately and that our elections are conducted fairly, legally, and free from outside influence.
Election integrity should never be just a Republican or Democrat issue. It is an American issue. Regardless of political affiliation, every citizen should want elections that are transparent, secure, and worthy of public confidence. We should all agree that foreign governments have no place anywhere near America’s election infrastructure. No foreign nation should ever have access to Americans’ voter records or possess any opportunity to interfere with or compromise the integrity of our electoral process.
For too long, election security has been treated as a partisan talking point rather than a shared constitutional responsibility. That approach only deepens public distrust. Americans deserve leaders who are willing to strengthen safeguards while assuring voters that the rule of law — not political expediency — governs our elections.
Scripture repeatedly teaches that God values honesty, justice, and impartiality. Proverbs 11:1 tells us that “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight.” While the verse speaks directly to commerce, the principle of fairness and just measure extends far beyond the marketplace. God cares deeply that systems governing human society are administered honestly and fairly. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, civil authorities are expected to execute justice impartially and uphold the rule of law.
Americans should be able to agree on some basic principles. Elections should be legal. They should be transparent. They should be secure. They should be administered equally under the law. And no foreign government should ever have access to Americans’ voter records or any opportunity to influence or corrupt our election process.
These principles should not divide us. They should unite us.
One of the clearest examples President Trump rightly emphasized is The SAVE Act, which, among other safeguards, would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Citizenship verification is a commonsense safeguard designed to protect a right reserved only for Americans.
President Trump’s speech was clearly intended to focus the nation’s attention on the importance of passing the SAVE Act before the upcoming midterm elections. Whether the Senate shares that sense of urgency remains to be seen.
When citizens trust the integrity of the ballot box, they strengthen confidence in the institutions of self-government and the people we choose to hold elected office. That is not a partisan victory. It is a deeply biblical and American one.
