Macron promises tight security as Olympic games approach

A national security analyst says the president of France has good reason to beef up security against potential terrorist attacks at this summer's Olympic games in Paris.

In the wake of the March 22 terrorist attack in Moscow, which was perpetrated by Islamic State Muslim terrorists, the French government raised its terrorism alert to the highest level.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, the Islamic State has already attempted attacks on French soil in recent months and more are expected.

Bob Maginnis, a senior fellow for national security at the Family Research Council, says that warning is “worrisome” considering the Olympics are coming to France in July.

“Olympics are a world stage,” he says, “and a great time for those that want to disrupt and seed ideas, [such as] terrorism.”

Maginnis says he has not forgotten the 1972 Olympics in Munich, when the Israeli team was attacked and 11 Jews were killed.

“And that could happen again,” he says.

Israeli's current war in Gaza has enraged Muslims worldwide, which could mean Israeli athletes could be targeted while participating in soccer matches, marathons and cycling, according to The Times of Israel.

Thomas Bach, the International Olympic Committee president, told reporters last week there is "no question" Israel will bring its athletes to France to compete.
