Social media one factor in drastic rise among trans children in Great Britain, doctor says

A study out of Great Britain finds that children there are 50 times more likely to suffer from gender distress than they were 10 years ago.

Experts on this side of the pond say there's no reason to believe U.S. children are any different.

Britain's National Health Service records show that in 2011, only 200 minors identified as transgender or struggled with gender dysphoria. That number had skyrocketed to 10,000 by 2021, with little girls leading the way.

The report said social media was to some extent responsible for the increase. Dr. Joseph Guthrie, a medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry, says all kids struggle with adolescence to some degree and tend to be easily influenced as well.

“And so both the children and their parents are seeking an explanation, and a ready explanation in the TikTok videos and social media is going to be gender dysphoria.

Great Britain banned puberty blockers and gender mutilation surgery for minors last December and Dr. Guthrie says for good reason.

“It does not help the rate of suicide, it does not improve the mental health outcomes. Instead, you see an actual worsening of mental health outcomes with these interventions,” he said.

Dr. Alex McFarland of Truth for a New Generation says some of the young people are looking for a way to stand out, to be different than their peers.

“It's a way to feel unique, it's a way to feel special, it's a way to think you have found who you are,” he told AFN.

But McFarland says the trans phenomenon harms young people both physically and spiritually.

“It's not that human nature has changed, it's not that human needs have changed, and it's certainly not that God's Word has changed.”
