"As the nation prepares to mark 25 years since Sept. 11, 2001, Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, may be facing the risk of renewed scrutiny and fresh political attack," CBS News posted on social media Monday.
The Left was quick to respond.
Mehdi Hasan, formerly of MSNBC, called the post "offensive, disgusting and Islamophobic." Podcast host Tim Miller said it was "despicable, anti-Muslim and woke right garbage."
Tim Graham of the Media Research Center says the reason "people are losing their minds" is because CBS has an outspoken and proud Jewish public figure at the helm.
"Some of them we understand; Oliver Darcy at the Status website, the former CNN reporter's always writing about Bari Weiss (pictured above) and how Bari Weiss is ruining everything," Graham notes. "I think the people that were the angriest about this just don't like that CBS News has an editor-in-chief who actually has some affinity for Israel."
In addition to hating CBS because of its perceived move to the center, he says the Left is getting tired of excusing and explaining the terrible campaign decisions El-Sayed continues to make.
"When a candidate shows by who he brings on the campaign trail that he has an intense hatred of Israel, they can't abide that someone would question him," the watchdog observes.
Political commentator Hasan Piker, who campaigned for El-Sayed during the primary, said in a 2019 livestream discussion about U.S. interventions in the Middle East that "America deserved 9/11."
More recently, El-Sayed's communications director faced backlash after another staff member posted a critique of Republican opponent Mike Rogers, writing that Rogers' campaign had "the aesthetics of a 1960s white flight suburb and a KKK cross burning."
Though the El-Sayed campaign subsequently distanced itself from the post, the Democratic candidate has drawn heavy scrutiny and controversy regarding Israel, antisemitism, and his political associations.
El-Sayed has stated that he is "not technically or practically DSA" and rejects the socialist label, but he has attended and spoken at a few local Democratic Socialists of America-affiliated events in the past, leading critics and organizers to note a history of interaction with the movement
Graham says, "Comparing Zionists to the Ku Klux Klan and saying CBS News is genocidal is just real craziness."
In his opinion, the Left's level of hysteria keeps rising as the Democratic party is swallowed whole by the DSA.
