With the Democrat presidential nominee slipping in the polls, the campaign has been forced to come out of the basement and take some questions from the press.
Normally that's not a heavy lift, given the tremendous liberal bias of the mainstream media, so her sit down with Bill Whitaker of CBS' 60 Minutes probably took her by surprise.
“Small businesses are part of the backbone of America's economy,” said Harris in missing the mark on one Whitaker inquiry.
The question was ...
"Pardon me Madam Vice President, the question was how are you going to pay for it," he responded.
Harris then answered with her well-used line of targeting wealthy Americans. “Well one of the things, I'm going to make sure that the richest among us pay their fair share in taxes.”
“But we're dealing with the real world here,” Whitaker said. “But the real world includes…,” said Harris, cutting him off.
But Whitaker held his ground. “How are you going to get this through Congress?” he asked.
Whitaker hit Harris on the economy, gun control, and her revolving stances on a variety of issues, including immigration.
“What I was asking was, was it a mistake to kind of allow that flood (of migrants) to happen in the first place?”
An act of journalism
Geoff Dickens of Media Research Center says Whitaker was surprisingly strong.
“CBS's Bill Whitaker actually performed an act of journalism. It actually held her feet to the fire. He asked her some good questions, some tough questions.”
Harris, on the other hand, floundered.
“She always gives that sense of the 8th grader that was assigned an oral book report but didn't read the book.”
Whitaker began his border question saying, “I’ve been covering the border for years, so I know this is not a problem that started with your administration.”
Sensing friendly ground, Harris jumped in with, “Correct, correct …”
But Whitaker wasn’t finished with the question. He pursued his border “flood” angle to no avail as Harris dodged the question.
But for 3 1/2 years ...
Harris did not address the administration’s first three-and-a-half years in office but referenced legislation signed by Biden in June that enforces restrictions on crossings after the number reaches a seven-day average
of 2,500.
She did not reference House Bill 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, which never reached a vote in the Democrat-led Senate.
“But the numbers today because of what we have done. We have cut the flow of illegal immigration by half. We have cut the flow of Fentanyl by half, but we need Congress to act to actually fix the problem,” Harris responded.
