Joseph and Arlene Kutzko say they haven't seen or spoken to daughter Sophie, 15, since January of 2025, when she was removed from their home.
Interviewed on Fox News Radio, the parents described a “secret transitioning” of Sophie by Norfolk Southboro Public Schools and its school counselors.
Joseph Kutzkosay described school teachings on gender, which his daughter was exposed to, and which conflict with the family’s Catholic beliefs about biology, and males and females.
“Beginning in late November of 2024, our daughter's behavior began to change,” he told Fox News.
Reacting to the parents' pushback, the Kutzkos allege school officials reported them to the state's Department of Children and Families. That state agency removed Sophie from her own home, because the parents wouldn't affirm the daughter’s transition from girl to boy.
The parents are represented by the Child and Parental Rights Campaign.
Supreme Court versus 'spaghetti supper'
The fight over parental rights in Massachusetts comes after U.S. Supreme Court cases have pushed back on liberal authorities and affirmed parental rights. Recent examples include Mahmoud v Taylor, a case from Maryland, and Mirabelli v Bonta. The Mirabelli case is from California.
Both cases, Mahmoud and Mirabelli, involve transgender ideology and a religious-like reverence for it by liberal school officials and powerful politicians.
In blue-state Massachusetts, where liberalism dominates the culture and politics, state leaders were forced to retreat from their ideology a decade ago after demanding churches recognize transgender rights.
The legal firm Alliance Defending Freedom fought the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination on behalf of churches that were required to recognize "gender identity" or face fines and even jail if they violated the law.
A settlement in that case, in 2016, defeated the so-called "spaghetti supper" test that recognized churches as public accommodations thus requiring them to follow the anti-discrimination law.
'Every parents' worst nightmare'
The parents and CPRC describe a race against time before the state government administers body-altering hormone treatments to the minor without their consent.
Sam Whiting, chief counsel at the Massachusetts Family Institute, described the Kutzkos family’s legal fight as “every parents' worst nightmare” coming true. It is also not the first time parents have battled liberal authorities in the state over the gender issue.
“This is probably the most severe situation that we've seen come to light, at least in recent memory, of a child just being taken away from their parents because they won't have their gender identity,” he advised.
C.J. Doyle, executive director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, called the parents’ fight for their child “appalling” for the parents and the child.
“This is something right out of a totalitarian society,” he told AFN.
"By the way," Doyle added, "the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families has a long history of this kind of arbitrary, authoritarian, and autocratic behavior."
