The Justice Department has announced in a press release that it has filed legal action against Gov. Gavin Newsom and Secretary of State Shirley Weber regarding the state of California's newly approved redistricting plan, enacted with the passage of Proposition 50. The suit alleges that the plan mandates racially gerrymandered congressional districts in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Associated Press reported previously that, as it stands, the passing of Proposition 50 gives the Democrats a chance to win as many as five additional seats in the House of Representatives. Republican congressmen in California will see a left-leaning shift in their districts, making it more likely that their seats will go to Democratic candidates during the next elections.
Cited in the release, Attorney General Pam Bondi says, “California’s redistricting scheme is a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process. Governor Newsom’s attempt to entrench one-party rule and silence millions of Californians will not stand."
Furthermore, she posted on X that Newsom should be more concerned about keeping the citizens of his state safe and shutting down Antifa instead of rigging California for political gain.
During an appearance on the Sean Hannity Show, Bondi talked about the DOJ joining the legal fight.
"They are flat out publicizing what they're trying to do and why they're trying to do it. They're trying to create seats based on race, and they can't do it,” says Bondi. “And we're going to hold them accountable just like any other state. I mean, they've very publicly said what they're trying to do, and it's illegal gerrymandering."
Bondi emphasizes that California cannot do that and says that they are going to keep up the legal pressure. Bondi says the DOJ has been consistently winning in the Supreme Court.
"We're going to continue suing California until they start complying with the laws of our country," states Bondi.
