Draining of campus swamps well underway

A columnist and author predicts a "reckoning" is coming for higher education in the U.S.

In recent days it has become clear that President Donald Trump is taking steps to keep his promise to drain the liberal swamps on most college campuses. Case in point: the administration's directive earlier this month to withdraw $400 million in grants from Columbia University, one of the most prestigious colleges in America.

In a recent Daily Signal column, Jarrett Stepman explains the administration's move was a response to Columbia's repeated failure to deal with out-of-control antisemitic demonstrations.

"There was a student takeover of one of the campus buildings that was not only violent but frankly [was] an immature lash out by many of the students there at the school," Stepman tells AFN.

Trump didn't stop with the grant withdrawals. Late last week, the administration delivered an ultimatum to Columbia, threatening to permanently end federal funding to the school unless it cedes control of an international studies department and implements sweeping changes to other campus policies.

Stepman argues that until now, most schools have let radicals run both the campus and the administration.

"I think the Trump administration has been relentless on this issue, and it's actually decided to put some outside pressure on these university systems that get public support, [that] are getting taxpayer dollars to continue their operations," he adds. "And it is interesting to see that Trump has been so aggressive on this."

"This isn't the same old GOP that complains about the radicalism and increasing uselessness of academia but does nothing," he states in his column.

With all the changes occurring on U.S. campuses, Stepman predicts that in five or ten years many schools will find they don't have the public support they once had.

Also last week, the U.S. Department of Education announced that more than 50 universities are being investigated for alleged racial discrimination as part of President Trump's campaign to erase DEI programs (diversity, equity, and inclusion) on American campuses.
