Not all parents on board with idea of banning phones for school kids

A growing number of states are considering a ban on cellphones in schools, and eight states, both red and blue, already have such bans in place, according to Breitbart News.

Dr. Rosemary Stein of the Christian Medical and Dental Association reports that the frustration level is rising because students will not stop using their phones during school hours. She believes that the onus should be put on parents rather than the schools.

"I think the goal that the schools have is to make the parents responsible and understand that then if the child, does not follow this, that they're going to be the ones hearing about it."

The push for cellphone bans has been driven by concerns about the impact screen time has on children’s mental health and complaints from teachers that cellphones have become a constant distraction in the classroom.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who has called on Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms about their effects on young peoples' lives, has said schools need to provide phone-free times, Breitbart reported.

Stein says habitual cellphone usage can affect students' vision, their reading their ability to do math … even their ability to carry on a conversation. In addition, there's an even more sinister consequence.

"They can learn to cheat because it's very easy to put a question into Google or to say it to Google under your breath on your cell phone and to get the right answer. So, the kid learns that being dishonest works."

For many parents, there’s another side of the story as reported school shootings have increased 130% since 2014.

Many some parents oppose cellphone bans in school, arguing they need to be able to contact their children in the event of an emergency, Breitbart reports.
