The University of Scranton, a private Catholic school, hired former Senator Bob Casey, Jr. to "mentor" students, immediately raising the hackles of some conservative Catholics, reports an article from The College Fix.
Abortion is taught as a ‘grave moral evil’ in the Catholic church because it destroys an innocent human created in God’s image, and Scranton stands by that in its mission.
Critics believe the school is compromising its values by hiring the pro-abortion politician, who’s main purpose is to advise the university and students regarding ethics in public service.
Casey claimed to be a pro-life Democrat, but after 2020, his support shifted toward his party’s pro-abortion stance. Not only did he attend a gala for a pro-abortion lobbying group, but he also voted for several pro-abortion bills. Casey even lost a bid for re-election last November to Senate Republican Dave McCormick after angering pro-life constituents.
Matt Lamb, associate editor of The College Fix, says the university action’s really mean that Casey will be a fundraiser.
"To translate, that means lobbying, meaning let's capitalize on his decades in the Senate, as well as his father's name and good reputation to bring in state and then, more likely, federal dollars to our campus," explains Lamb.
Scranton’s president, Reverend Joseph Marina, highlighted Casey for his Jesuit background during the hiring announcement. However, Lamb says Casey was hired for the lobbying skills he acquired during his years in Congress, not for his Jesuit training.
"Bob Casey is a complete sellout to the pro-life movement, and he honestly is a disgrace to the name Bob Casey. His father, of course, as many pro-life activists know, was a staunch opponent of abortion and actually did live out his Catholicism," says Lamb.
