In the final minutes of their regular session, West Virginia lawmakers passed the Unborn Child with Down Syndrome Protection and Education Act, which makes aborting them illegal.
Dr. Wanda Franz of West Virginians for Life tells AFN the bill requires doctors to give educational materials to the expectant mother if a screening test indicates a disability.
The bill passed 27-5 in the state Senate after an 81-17 vote in the House of Delegates.
Franz says the public would be shocked to learn many pre-born babies are aborted after an inaccurate diagnosis, a fact she learned herself after researching the issue for the pro-life bill.
“I've been just shocked,” she says, “at how the screening tests for detecting these fetal disabilities have incredibly high false/positives.”
The lead sponsor in the Senate was Patricia Rucker. Kayla Kessinger introduced it in the House of Delegates.
