According to Stephen Bullivant's new book, "Nonverts: The Making of Ex-Christian America," another generation of godless parents is raising another generation of godless kids, and essentially, young adults are leading the way out the church doors and into a secular world.
Dr. Alex McFarland of Truth for a New Generation submits that boomers dropped the ball.
"Young people are abandoning values and beliefs that would've been unquestioned by previous generations," he observes. "The foundational mindset that really makes people open to belief in God, moral boundaries, personal accountability, and the gospel have been all but bulldozed away from the public consciousness."
And McFarland says COVID lockdowns made things worse.
"Faithful church participation is down all across America," he notes. "It had been declining for some time, and COVID really was a turning point."
But even though Americans are leaving church, they are still seeking.
"The spiritual hunger is as acute as ever," says McFarland. "Personalized, individual spiritual hunger is as acute as ever, and people do care about where they stand with God."
He adds that many of those who are leaving are being seduced by the secular culture.
"Our nation is in the midst of a spiritual battle," the apologist acknowledges. "Public education is militantly secular, [and] the news media coverage is very skewed towards secularism and socialism."
Pew Research estimates that unless believers turn things around, Christians will be a minority by the year 2070.
