Christians in the most repressive and persecution-prone countries in Asia know God watches over them, sometimes with miraculous protection.

Todd Nettleton of The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) tells the story of a young Vietnamese man who felt called to get a box of Bibles up to the country's highlands, where God's Word is scarce.

He knew getting caught could mean years of torture in prison, but the call was clear and unavoidable. So, this young believer collected the Bibles, put them in a box, and started on his way to the highlands.

"He got his box of Bibles, he got on the bus, and he was praying, 'Lord, protect me. Protect me. Protect me,'" Nettleton relays. "He knew there were checkpoints all along the way."

He thought the jig was up even before the bus left the station, when a police captain got on and sat down beside him.

"He took his hat off and set it on the box of Bibles that was sitting on the floor of the bus, and then he went to sleep," the VOM spokesman reports.

They passed checkpoint after checkpoint, where officers boarded the bus and searched everywhere, except under the police captain's hat.

"Every time the police boarded the bus, they would go through the bus, they would see his hat sitting on that box, and they just assumed the box belonged to the police captain," says Nettleton.

The captain never moved a muscle and did not wake up until they reached the end of the line.

"[He] took his hat off the box, put it back on his head, got off the bus, and our Christian friend got off the bus as well, safely with his box of Bibles," Nettleton reports.

November is widely recognized as Global Bible Month, but VOM encourages prayer and support for believers who risk their lives to own a Bible year-round. Believers can help ensure that their brothers and sisters in Christ, including in the world's most dangerous nations, has his or her own copy of the Bible.
