The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is urging President-elect Trump to disband the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
NSSF's Mark Oliva says the taxpayer-funded operation was set up purely to appease the gun control lobby.
"That is designed and set up to denigrate the Second Amendment, take away your rights, and not allow you to exercise the full spectrum of your constitutional liberties," says Oliva.
Oliva adds that law enforcement entities are responsible for things such as misuse of firearms. Therefore, Oliva does not see the need for another form of oversight.
"This is an office that was set up and controlled by Vice President Kamala Harris," says Oliva. "She is the gun control czar of the Biden administration, and this is an office that has really used their authorities and their abilities to go after the firearms industry, the ammunition manufacturers, to go after the lawful owners of firearms."
To put it another way, Oliva says, "This has really been something that is harmful."
The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention was created in September 2023. In addition to Harris, other people involved with the Office include Stefanie Feldman, a longtime policy advisor to President Biden on gun violence prevention. Feldman was announced as Director of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Greg Jackson and Rob Wilcox, "leading gun violence prevention advocates" joined the administration as deputy directors.
The White House take
"The Office of Gun Violence Prevention builds on historic actions taken by President Biden to end gun violence in our country," said the White House. "That includes signing the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant legislative action in nearly 30 years aimed at doing so, and taking more meaningful executive action than any other president to make our schools, churches, grocery stores, and communities safer."
Oliva is not swayed.
"Biden created this office with the stroke of a pen, and President Trump can dismantle this office with the stroke of a pen," says Oliva. "If Trump wanted to, he could just rename that office and make it something that is tasked with ensuring that Americans are able to enjoy their Second Amendment rights."
